Fly River Warriors Ready for Capital Showdown

By KENNY ROMANUS in Port Moresby

The Fly River Warriors will face a major test of their rugby league development program tomorrow, Saturday, March 14, 2026, when they take on two Digicel ExxonMobil Cup teams in a series of trial matches in Port Moresby.

The Western Province-based side will meet the Central Dabaris and the Port Moresby Vipers in matches scheduled at Sir John Guise Stadium.

The Warriors arrived in the capital four weeks ago and have since been undergoing intensive training and conditioning as part of a high-performance camp aimed at preparing players for a higher level of competition.

The trial matches will provide an important opportunity for the squad to measure their performance against established semi-professional teams, while also giving players a platform to showcase their talent in front of rugby league scouts and selectors.

Three matches are scheduled for tomorrow at Sir John Guise Stadium. The first match at 11am will see Fly River Warriors Team One, known as the Western Reds, take on Central Dabaris. At 1pm, Central Dabaris will face the Port Moresby Vipers before the final match at 3pm where Fly River Warriors Team Two, the Western Yellows, will meet the Port Moresby Vipers.

The Warriors squad is largely made up of district representatives from South Fly, Delta Fly, Middle Fly and North Fly who recently competed in the Fly River Rugby League Cup Tournament held in Daru, South Fly District.

The tournament served as a key selection platform, with 36 young players chosen to form the core of the squad. An additional four players were selected from the Port Moresby-based Waliya Club to complete the 40-man lineup across the two teams.

Team officials say the Port Moresby training camp has been designed to strengthen discipline, improve team structures and expose the players to a more competitive rugby league environment as Western Province continues to develop its pathway for young athletes.

Supporters in Port Moresby, particularly members of the Western Province community, are expected to turn out in numbers to support the team as they aim to make a strong impression on the capital’s rugby league stage.

Gates will open at 10am with an entry fee of K5.

The program is supported by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) and the Fly River Provincial Government (FRPG), with additional support from the Sustainable Development Program (SDP), Dokona Papua Construction (DPC), Millennium Construction Limited (MCL) and Lotic Bige Limited (LBL).

St. Montfort Kiunga Teachers College Officially Installs College Management and Announces First Intake for 2026

By Kenny Romanus

The residents of Kiunga witnessed the official installation of the college management staff and the announcement of the 2026 academic program at the St. Montfort Kiunga Teachers College(SMKTC) premises on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

The college, located behind St. Gabriel’s Technical Secondary School (SGTSS), will be run by the St. Gabriel Brothers under the Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga.

Invited guests included Bishop of Daru-Kiunga Diocese Joseph Durero, North Fly MP and Deputy Opposition Leader James Donald, North Fly District Administrator Greg Isau, Western Provincial Education Advisor Charlie Buia, Senior Schools Inspector Anthony Wilson, and representatives from other key stakeholder groups.

Through an agreement between the Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga and the St. Gabriel Brothers, the NFDDA Board has appointed Brother Lucianus Lakra as Principal and Brother Benny Luis as Assistant Principal.

This means the management team will immediately take up residence on campus and begin preparations for the 2026 student intake. The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science & Technology (DHERST) has already given its approval for the commencement of the 2026 program.

The college plans to enroll 40 students in its inaugural intake for 2026. Applications will be accepted manually. Grade 12 school leavers and FODE upgraders with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.8 are encouraged to apply.

The ceremony also included the blessing and opening of five new facilities: the 8-in-1 lecture building, Administration Building, male and female ablution blocks, and two staff houses.

MES & SMKTC Project Manager Kevin Joseph acknowledged the efforts of North Fly MP James Donald, the North Fly District Administration, the Fly River Provincial Government led by Governor Taboi Awi Yoto, Provincial Administrator Robert Alphones Kaiyun, and other government divisions. He also thanked the Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga under Rev. Bishop Joseph Durero SVD and the missionaries for their support.

Mr. Joseph shared that the Montfort Missionaries had long envisioned establishing such an institution in Western Province. The idea gained momentum during the severe teacher shortages of 2015–2016, when many school leavers had to study outside the province.

Following MP Donald’s election in 2017, discussions were initiated, and the project was formally announced, followed by the groundbreaking ceremony in 2020.

He thanked the NFDDA for driving the project forward and highlighted the milestone achievement of opening five new buildings. He said the event marked the installation of administrative staff, the opening of new facilities, and the beginning of preparations for the 2026 program.

“As work kicks off, the inspection team will visit the college to assess whether it meets national standards. We need to tick off certain checklist items before the college can be fully registered,” he said.

Rev. Bishop Joseph Durero SVD commended the resilience, spirit, and partnership behind the project, acknowledging those who worked behind the scenes.

“Every institution begins with a vision. This vision aligns with the national education transformation outlined in the Education Strategic Plan 2015–2019, which emphasized that quality education begins with quality teachers,” he said.

He noted that national policies identify teacher training as the cornerstone of systematic education reform. The seed of SMKTC was first supported by the North Fly District and later adopted as a vital provincial project.

Western Provincial Education Advisor Charlie Buia described education as “a big industry,” worth more than major companies.

“When we invest in education, we invest in people who will lead this nation. One student trained here will go on to educate many others,” he said.

He stated that the division will work closely with the college management. A key first requirement is establishing the Board of Governors, as mandated by DHERST. He also encouraged the college to participate in in-service training under the current education reforms.

Western Province now has three teachers colleges (Gaulim Campus in Daru, Balimo Teachers College, and SMKTC), one technical college (Kiunga Vocational), and two nursing colleges (Balimo and Rumginae).

North Fly MP James Donald said that since taking office in 2018, his vision has been for people to be healthy, educated, have three meals a day, and have money in their pockets through agribusiness. Establishing a teachers college, he said, was part of building the “factory that produces the next educated populace.”

Mr. Donald announced that PNG Sustainable Development Program (SDP) will fund 12 new staff houses for the college. He thanked SDP, FRPG, and other partners for their contributions.

He explained that the project has six development stages, of which two have been completed.

By the end of next year, the college is expected to have full boarding facilities. However, the first intake will consist of day students only, limited to locals with accommodation.

Mr. Donald also shared his aim to eventually upgrade the college to an institute and later a university. He hopes SMKTC will become one of the best in the country and eventually operate as a paperless institution.

“I want you to produce teachers with innovation, ethics, standards, and the intelligence to take this country into the next 50 years,” he said.

He urged the board to conduct strict and fair screening of applicants and avoid any “backdoor selections.” He reassured the public that the college will remain standalone even if registration takes time.

He also informed the people of North Fly that the district now has a teachers college and a nursing college at Rumginae. He further announced that mobilization for a new Agriculture College has been completed, with construction to commence soon at Drimgas village along the Fly River.

Community representative and parent Doris Amboman expressed her excitement, saying the college will ease the burden on parents who previously had to send their children to institutions in other provinces often facing issues such as late registration, lack of accommodation, and additional expenses for transport and food.

“Having this college at our doorstep will make it easier for the students and for us, the parents, both now and in the future,” she said.

The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a tour of the facilities, which was also open to the general public.

Gogodala’s Sacred Aida Dance Revived in Balimo on PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary

By Kenny Romanus in Balimo, Delta Fly District,  Western Province

Once silenced by early missionaries, the Gogodala people’s sacred Aida Dance has resurfaced in Balimo, rekindling cultural pride and sparking conversations about the future of cultural tourism in Western Province.

When missionaries first arrived in Western Province decades ago, they discouraged and forbade many traditional practices they deemed pagan, including the Aida Dance. For the Gogodala, this dance was more than performance, it was a sacred ritual involving communication with ancestral spirits. As a result, it remained hidden for generations.

But at a recent cultural showcase in Balimo, the Aida Dance was performed once again, standing as one of the highlights of the celebrations.

A cultural narrator explained that preparations for the dance are traditionally intense and deeply spiritual, often requiring dancers to camp out and rehearse for two to three months before the performance. “In the past, it was believed that if the Aida Dance was not performed, the entire group involved would be attacked or even killed by the spirits,” he said.

This performance, however, was embraced with gratitude. The narrator praised the local organizers for creating space to revive the dance, describing it as an act of liberation from the fear of spirits and a step toward reclaiming cultural identity.

Papua New Guinea is home to more than 800 cultures, each with traditions that are either thriving, fading, or, in some cases, long forbidden. The Gogodala’s Aida Dance serves as a reminder of the rich and diverse heritage within Western Province heritage that could also be harnessed as untapped tourism potential.

As the Gogodala people relive the power of their traditions, the Aida Dance now carries not only echoes of the past but also possibilities for the future where culture, identity, and tourism can walk hand in hand.

Minister Mirisim Urges Swift Action on Frieda River Project

Works and Highways Minister and Telefomin MP, Solan Mirisim, has urged the immediate commencement of the Frieda River Copper and Gold Project, describing it as a game-changing development for Telefomin and Papua New Guinea.

Minister Mirisim highlighted that the long-delayed project carries enormous potential to stimulate economic growth, generate employment, and deliver much-needed infrastructure to one of the country’s most isolated regions.

“The Frieda River Project is more than a mining venture it represents a gateway to opening up Telefomin, providing roads, services, and opportunities for our people. I strongly believe this project must proceed without further delay,” Minister Mirisim stated.

He stressed that when managed responsibly, resource developments can serve as engines of progress, bringing broad benefits at both local and national levels.

The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the project advances in a way that balances economic gains with environmental protection and social responsibility.

Major Accident Along Kiunga–Tabubil Highway

By Kenny Romanus

A major road accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, August 5, 2025 at around 4:00 pm at Kilometre 64, near Tea Wara, along the Kiunga–Tabubil Highway in North Fly District.

The collision involved a 25-seater PMV bus and a Hino Dyna truck.

Tragically, two people were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others sustained critical injuries and are now receiving urgent medical attention in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Kiunga District Hospital’s Outpatient Department.

Locals and passing motorists acted swiftly, assisting in rescue efforts alongside Matkomnae Health Centre’s ambulance team. The deceased were transported to Kiunga District Hospital by an ambulance, while the two victims who were critically injured were rushed down by a private vehicle.

With the growing number of vehicles on the Kiunga–Tabubil Highway, authorities are again reminding the public that road safety remains a top priority.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. Western Star will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

Daru Honors War Heroes with Dawn Service Tribute

By Kenny Romanus

As the rest of Papua New Guinea paid tribute to its armed forces for their roles in World War II, the Daru town in Western Province also held its own dawn service to mark the occasion.

On the morning of Wednesday, July 23, 2025, residents including children, parents, and community members gathered at the Remembrance Park to participate in the solemn ceremony.

Members of PNG Defence Force and Police based in Daru laid wreaths and offered tributes in honor of those who served.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mai Jubi, President of the Returned Services League (RSL), commended the disciplinary forces on the island for showing great respect and upholding the legacy of national sacrifice.

Mr. Jubi urged the people of Daru to remember the historical significance of this day and the bravery of soldiers that played a key role in defending the country during the war, a defining moment in PNG’s early political and military history.

“Many of them were untrained,” he said. “Some served in the navy, others in ground battalions. They earned the name ‘Green Shadows’ because the natural colors of our environment helped conceal them from the Japanese.”

He emphasized that the sacrifices made during that time were the foundation upon which the nation’s independence was built.

“We should take pride in honoring their sacrifices, it is through their efforts that we gained our freedom,” he said.

Mr. Jubi also reflected on the moment when Australian flags were raised along the Kokoda Track, causing confusion among Japanese forces and signaling that Australia was already engaged in defending Papua New Guinea.

He concluded by reminding those in attendance that the Cross of Sacrifice (Monument) at the Remembrance Park stands as a powerful symbol of the actions taken 83 years ago, in 1942, to defend the nation.

Meantime, a significant number of the earliest soldiers in Papua New Guinea’s military, the Pacific Infantry Battalion during World War II, were recruited from the Western Province, including Daru. They fought alongside Australian forces in jungle combat and played a key role in establishing what is now the PNG Defence Force.

Deaf and Non-Verbal Individuals Attend Sign Language Training in Kiunga

By Kenny Romanus

Twenty-five participants took part in a four-day sign language training held in Kiunga, located in the North Fly District of Western Province.

The training was led by Clare Guria from Port Moresby, an officer with the Callan Service National Unit (CSNU), under the “All Ears Project.” She was assisted by sign language interpreter Heidi Martin. The workshop brought together staff from Callan Service Kiunga, healthcare workers, early childhood educators, government officials from various departments, and individuals with disabilities, including those who are physically disabled or non-verbal.

Training sessions focused on both Culture Sign Language and PNG Sign Language. Participants were taught to count, spell the alphabet, and form words, sentences, and short paragraphs using sign language.

On Friday, July 18, the final day of the training featured a 50-mark test, divided into four sections: finger spelling words, finger spelling numbers, short sentences, and short paragraphs.

Ms. Guria expressed her gratitude to the participants and shared that only a few locations were selected for workshops this year, with Kiunga among them. She noted that some provinces lack formal disability associations, making it difficult to assess the local population of persons with disabilities and plan such initiatives.

“Training like this are determined based on the number of persons with disabilities in a given area or province,” she explained.

Local Sign Language Teacher/Participant, Sapa Ura Kasame, who is deaf and non-verbal, conveyed through interpreter Miss Otiwai expressed his appreciation for the training, which was the first of its kind in Western Province. He urged that sign language be incorporated into public events to ensure inclusivity for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

He also emphasized the need for sign language to be taught across public and private sectors to help break down communication barriers.

Anore Martin, a CSNU technician with the Callan Project in Kiunga, said they face challenges communicating with deaf students at the center. She supported Mr. Kasame’s call for wider sign language education, as natural signs used by normal people communicating with deaf individuals can often lead to miscommunication. She said the training helped her gain foundational skills in sign language, which will be useful in her role.

Wangimop Dinop, Coordinator for Disabilities at the Office of Community Development & Welfare Services, said on behalf of the Western Province Organization of PWDs that lessons from the training could be extended to public offices in Kiunga and North Fly, potentially with Mr. Kasame as a local instructor.

Theo Katingo, Disability Representative from the North Fly DDA board, highlighted the need for effective communication and equitable service delivery through partnerships with Callan Service Kiunga. He called on stakeholders and government bodies to collaborate with the center.

Meanwhile, participants expressed appreciation to Steamships for sponsoring the training.

Aramba Development Foundation Inc Launches Food Security Program

Rice mills at Serki Village during the launching

By Kenny Romanus

A major step toward strengthening food security in Saru area was marked with the official launch of the Aramba Development Foundation Inc.’s (ADF) Food Security Program.

A large gathering of locals from the Aramba tribe and neighboring Suki and Nama communities attended the launch ceremony, which celebrated a significant milestone in the Aramba tribes’ development journey.

The event, held in South Fly’s Serki Village, saw the handover of 10 rice mills and a generator, donated through generous support from the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program and Irish Aid. The total value of the equipment is AUD 9,202 and EUR 5,514.52.

The rice mills and generator will be distributed across nine communities in the Saru area, including Serki, Kiriwo, Eniyawa, Goe, Sitavi, Meru, Zembo, Keru, and Geri villages.

ADF Chairman Francis Fawe expressed deep appreciation to the donor partners, describing the gesture as a powerful endorsement of the people’s potential. “These contributions are more than acts of charity; they are acts of trust and solidarity,” he said.

“The donors have chosen not only to invest in food security, but in people, their dignity and their aspirations.”

Mr. Fawe encouraged community members to take full ownership of the equipment and ensure responsible management to guarantee long-term benefits and sustainability.

He also acknowledged the hard work of ADF’s agricultural officers, Mr. Sarwi Wiyahk, Mr. Garifa Togina, and Mr. Hox Bai, alongside a team of dedicated volunteers. Their efforts, he said, have been instrumental in advancing local economic development, often under challenging conditions.

Both Mr. Togina and Mr. Bai are graduates of the Trukai Smart Farmer Program, where they received training in smart, irrigated rice farming at PNG University of Technology(Unitech) and Pacific Adventist University(PAU). They have since successfully established rice farms in their respective communities.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting was conducted by Mr. Buidu Gainu, Acting Officer-in-Charge of the Nakaku government station.

Due to logistical challenges at the Suki jetty, the rice mills were transported by air from Port Moresby to Daru, then delivered to Serki village by sea.

The initiative marks a critical step forward in promoting food self-reliance and community resilience in the Aramba area, further reinforcing ADF’s mission of sustainable rural development.

Rumginae School of Nursing to Celebrate 50 years of Training and Graduating CHWs

By Kenny Romanus

THE Rumginae School of Nursing (RSON), located along the Kiunga-Tabubil highway, will celebrate its 50th years of training and graduating Community Health Workers (CHWs) on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Rumginae Mission Station.

Founded in the late 1960s by formerly Unevangelized Fields Mission (UFM) which is now Asia Pacific Christian Mission (APCM) medical professionals, the school and hospital initially aimed to train Aidpost Officers (APOs) to work at Aidposts. After some years, Nurse Aid Training was offered to support rural healthcare services at Sub Health Centers and Health Centers.

In 1988, the school merged both programs into a unified CHW training initiative, which was further revised into a 3-year curriculum in 2000. Today, the institution provides a Certificate IV competency-based training program for CHWs.

Following the departure of the missionaries, the school was handed over to national leadership under the Evangelical Church of Papua New Guinea (ECPNG).

Mr. Amos Kupaloma, the Principal of RSON, expressed gratitude for the support received from various organizations, including Christian Health Services, ECPNG Health Services, Catholic Health Services, and Key government agencies from the National, Provincial, Districts and among other stakeholders in reaching this milestone.

Mr. Kupaloma noted that the school’s impact extends beyond Western Province, with graduates from all over Papua New Guinea. Some of these graduates have gone on to pursue further studies in healthcare professions, becoming Nursing Officers, Health Extension Officers (HEOs), Medical Officers, and others.

A significant achievement for the school was its elevation to Nursing School status in 2022, with the first batch of General Nursing students enrolled in 2023. The school now offers both a Certificate IV in CHW and a Diploma in General Nursing, and it has also been recognized by the DHERST.

“I thank all individuals who have contributed to the school’s success and progress, and expressed gratitude to the Creator and development partners for supporting the school’s journey over the past 50 years and in the next 50 years or more going forward.”
